Effects of Helicopter Dynamics on Autorotation Transfer of Training

This paper analyzes the effects of helicopter dynamics on pilots’ learning process and transfer learned skills during autorotation training. A quasi-transfer-of-training experiment was performed with 14 experienced pilots in a moving-base flight simulator. Two types dynamics, characterized by different autorotative index, were considered: “hard,” high pilot compensation required, “easy,” low required. groups tested two training sequence: hard-easy-hard (HEH group) easy-hard-easy (EHE group). Participants both able to attain adequate performance at touchdown most landings dynamics. However, clear positive effect terms acquired is found from hard easy but not confirming previous experimental evidence. Positive especially observed for rate descent touchdown. The differed control strategy applied, HEH group having developed more robust technique. During last phase EHE aligned its that group.
